Bio:

Alex Cooke is the Director of Electronic Music and a member of the theory and composition faculty at the Cleveland Institute of Music. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he studied with Keith Fitch and Steven Mark Kohn. He also holds a Master of Science degree in Applied Mathematics at Case Western Reserve University, as well as degrees in Dance and Psychology. His music is characterized by a strong attention to texture and melody; it often draws inspiration from natural phenomena, seeking to evoke complex sensory experiences in a musical setting. In addition to his classically oriented compositions, Cooke is also an avid songwriter and electronic musician.

Cooke's research examines the connections between physics, math, and music. He and co-PI Jesse Berezovsky (Case Western Reserve University) recently received an Expanding Horizons Initiative grant for their work on the relationship between phase transitions and musical temperament. Other research includes the application of Markov processes to composition and the applications of matrix analysis to harmonic behavior.

Dr. Cooke has received numerous awards for his work, including the Lily Dreyfuss Memorial Award for musical achievement in dance and the Flora Stone Award for achievements in the humanities and was recently named a finalist in the ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Competition for his piece Lac de Feu. For six years, he served as the Resident Composer and Music Director for R.E.D. Dance Company in Akron, OH;

Cooke’s works have been featured by Case Western Reserve University, R.E.D. Dance Company, the CooperMorgan Dance Company, the City of Akron Summer Arts Experience, the Massillon Museum, and many other venues. Recent commissions include R.E.D. Dance Company, CooperMorgan Dance Company, the Massillon Museum, and the Moanin’ Frogs Saxophone Sextet.

In addition to his musical endeavors, Mr. Cooke is an avid photographer and equestrian. He is also editor-in-chief for the popular online photography magazine Fstoppers.
